On August 22, Toulouse Football Club lost 2-0 to Olympique Lyonnais at the Stadium. Despite this first defeat, Danish coach Jens Berthel Askou affirmed that the team possesses unprecedented potential in the club’s recent history. He stated: “This team has more potential than any other we have had in recent years.”
Askou reminded that TFC has made two of its biggest sales this season. Dayann Methalie was transferred to Sunderland for nearly 32 million euros, while Emersonn joined Ipswich Town for 34 million euros. These exits freed significant financial resources for the club.
On the pitch, TFC displayed an intense, offensive style of play. The coach noted that the team pressed, created chances, and was the protagonist of the match. He added: “We pressed, we created chances, we were protagonists. I would have been disappointed if people left after watching a boring match. I don’t think that was the case, even though there is frustration.”
Statistics confirm this approach. TFC recorded 2.6 expected goals, an index measuring the likelihood that an opportunity turns into a goal. This figure is very high, but the team lacked efficiency in front of goal, a problem that his predecessor, Carles Martinez Novell, faced in the last two seasons.
Askou stressed the need to add a striker capable of converting these chances. The Olivier Cloarec–Viktor Bezhani duo has a week to bring in a player who will complete the coach’s project. He summed up: “To win a football match, you need three things: control, create chances, and score them. Control, we had a lot against Lyon, we conceded little; chances, we created plenty, more than enough; converting them is the only thing we lacked.”
Meanwhile, Askou discussed the development of young players. He said: “We also have many young players who are making their first steps in Ligue 1, looking for their bearings, coming from Denmark, Sweden. We still need to progress athletically; young players must build a physical capital capable of meeting Ligue 1 demands, which takes time. We haven’t finished building this team, it’s still early, and the season is long, but I am very optimistic for the future.”
Toulouse’s next match will be against Brest on August 29. The coach hopes the team can maintain the same quality of play and convert more chances in this game.
